Wine Estate

Mülheim is a unique place. Surrounded by the beautiful and ancient riverbed of the Mosel river you can find Mülheimer Sonnenlay, Europe’s only elevation completely covered in vines. The wines from Mülheim have played their parts in history, and are famous for having been served on the legendary airships “Hindenburg” and “Graf Zeppelin” in the year 1920. It is said that the exclusive restaurants on those zeppelins served our Mülheim wines as their top customer choice, and the village crowns a “Zeppelinwein” to honour this tradition every year.

Our estate, Weingut Hammes, is located right in the heart of Mülheim. We are Sigrid, Jürgen, Joanna and Markus Hammes. Living in the Hammes vineyard and wine estate, we work as a team and live as a family. We have been making wine in Mülheim for five generations, a long time we look back on proudly. The wine estate has grown out of a farming business working with crops and animals. Once Sigrid and Jürgen were married, the estate benefited from Sigrid’s own winemaking history: new vineyards, new energy and new ideas invigorated Weingut Hammes and together they built the wine estate you see today. The modern Hammes estate features 7.3 hectars of vineyard and two holiday apartments for visitors. Markus Hammes, the son of Sigrid and Jürgen, is ready to become the next generation of Hammes winemakers together with his wife Joanna and their charming children Alexander and Leon.

You are invited to visit Weingut Hammes and experience the fascination of the Mosel valley with its unique landscapes, people and world-class wines.

Holiday Apartments

Our two apartments “Sonnenlay” and “Moseltal” are where Sigrid comes into her own. Her love and attention to detail is evident in every corner of these two gems. Your relaxing holiday will start right here in 80 square metres of living space featuring satellite TV, Wi-Fi connection, two bathrooms and a modern kitchen with dishwasher in each apartment. We want you to feel right at home when you stay with us, and our door is always open to you for questions and tips around your stay.

The Mosel is an incredibly multifaceted holiday destination with its many river bends, tiny villages and steep slopes. Our home offers something for every visitor, from its Roman roots in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, to the historic “Deutsches Eck” in Koblenz. The river’s length is easy to explore by car, bicycle or on a peaceful walk, and you will find Mülheim’s central location extremely handy. It’s only a few minutes to drive to Bernkastel-Kues and experience its many sights and events, but just as easy to reach the cities of Trier and Koblenz.

We look forward to helping you make the most of your stay with our knowledge of the best excursions, restaurants and the most beautiful hiking routes. And of course, you will not miss a tour of the wine estate and an introduction to the wines of Weingut Hammes through a guided tasting with our master winemakers. But our favourite thing to do is to enjoy a nice relaxing glass of wine with you in our yard at the end of a lovely day.

„So many of our guests have become true friends, returning again and again for another holiday with us” Sigrid Hammes
